How do you sing with an open throat?
And above all, what does it mean to have an open throat anyway?
Well, the answer is elementary my dears.
An open throat is the result of the passing air. When you inhale, the throat relaxes and allows the passage of the airflow in, and then out. The secret is to maintain that openness throughout the singing process. So every time you breathe in, it is a new opportunity to relax and open.
But relaxation should not be confused with “dead” and “collapsed”. Nothing should be inactive. Relaxation in singing only means “being present”, in a neutral state, where the throat is not pushing the sound out.
In summary:
1) Breathe in by means of [a], the jaw is slightly open.
2) Start the first sound on that same position.
3) Maintain that position until you are done with the melodic phrase and ready to breathe in again.
