With over 15 years of experience in voice teaching, I’ve come to the conclusion that often, male singers find it easier to start their warm-up routine on an “i” vowel.
The “i” helps in finding a pure and thin sound while keeping the airflow constant.
After running a melodic phrase on an “i”, you may either do the same exercise on another vowel, or change it completely. Don’t forget to start soft and without pushing the sound out. Allow the airflow to guide the voice through.
Maintain a healthy lifestyle and keep you body active. I personally get physical before singing by either running/biking or working out at the gym.
