Tension in the throat when you sing is a common symptom. But not to worry, there are several ways that you can correct this issue. In most cases, it all revolves around bad singing habits and the desire to create sound effects in the voice. Yet, even though “tension” belongs to the physical world, it holds deeper layers that go straight to your mind.

Focus and Energy

The most important thing when it comes to singing is developing the technic. And with time, tension and bad habits usually dissipate. The best way to sing is the right way.

Where are you focusing on when you sing? If you focus on your throat, you will automatically direct loads of energy into this area which means that you will start controlling and tensing the muscles around it. The best way to correct this is to focus elsewhere, like for instance: the air support. We need the airflow to be constant and balanced. Once your energy is directed towards the air, the throat is irrelevant at that point. So always focus your thoughts and your mind further away from where you think you should. The throat is a passage, not a destination. The key is to feel the body.

Posture

Your legs will hold the structure of the body. They are what will keep you stable and in place. When you stand on both legs, it is needless to say that you will stand straight. OK? Stand straight, neck and head straight at all times. This will allow you to remain aligned without breaking the course of the airflow going from your lungs, and up towards your head. If you feel you need to see a specialist, please do so. Chiropractors, Osteopath and others can help you correct your overall posture. Remember that the voice is connected to the body.

What does your mind say ?

Every tension in your body can be associated with some tension in your life. This reflects in your singing voice. Stress, anger, and anxiety will play a role in how you deliver the sound when you sing. When we mention “letting go”, it means releasing this tension and allowing yourself and your body to be in a neutral state, the way you were born. Again, if you wish to consult, there is no shame in doing so. The more you know, the greater you become; and the better you get at correcting things. These are the main rules for achieving greatness. It would be wise to take a break at some point…
